Dallas Cowboys owner and general manager Jerry Jones said recently that Dak Prescott will be extended, but doing so was completely unnecessary

Dak Prescott is 25-15 in his career as the starting quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, but that number is severely inflated by his outstanding rookie season. That year, 2016, the Cowboys unexpectedly went 13-3 when Prescott filled in for an injured Tony Romo.

The fourth-round pick was the third option after a back injury to Romo and a broken leg to Kellen Moore. He then proceeded to have one of the best rookie seasons ever, even winning the NFL’s Rookie of the Year award for his work.

However, since that season, the Cowboys are just 12-12 with Dak under center. Last year, most of the issues were attributed to running back Ezekiel Elliott being suspended for six games. While that’s a pretty bad excuse to make for someone who is supposed to be the franchise quarterback, the team is actually worse this season with Elliott back.

Dallas is off to a 3-5 start, which was highlighted by a horrific outing on Monday night against the Tennessee Titans. After the frustrating 28-14 loss, owner and general manager Jerry Jones completely ignored the cries of the frustrated fan base and doubled down on Dak.

"“Dak (Prescott) is the quarterback of the Dallas Cowboys, he’s young and he’s going to get extended” said Jones according to 105.3 The Fan in Dallas"

Proclaiming Prescott will get an extension is premature and foolish. One reason for this is Prescott has been so inconsistent. He’s not a true pocket passer and his awareness while standing in the pocket is terrible. He displayed that in their last loss as he saw phantom rushers and escaped a clean pocket more than once.

Prescott is also very poorly prepared. After 15 games to get ready for the Titans, he came out like he had less than three days to cram for a big final.

Another reason Jones’ claim is foolish is that there’s no hurry to get him signed. Prescott has another season on his rookie deal and hasn’t proved he deserves an early renewal. It also hurts them in any negotiations and Jones has already put his cards on the table.

Instead of trying to lock him up with a year left, Dallas should be all about making Prescott prove himself in a contract year — maybe with another play caller maybe?

Up to this point in his career, Prescott has done nothing to warrant an extension. Coming out and saying it will happen hurts Dallas in more ways than one, and Jones should have never said anything.
