Chicago Bears: RT Ja’Wuan James

Last offseason, the Chicago Bears went after offensive skill players to hasten Mitchell Trubisky’s development, acquiring wideouts Allen Robinson, Taylor Gabriel, Anthony Miller and a receiving tight end in Trey Burton. In the coming months, general manager Ryan Pace has to consider talents who can seal the edge for the ground attack.

Right tackle Bobby Massie is set to become a free agent in March. He’s started 39 contests over the last three seasons. The 29-year-old has been inconsistent as a pass protector since coming over from the Arizona Cardinals during the 2016 offseason, allowing nine sacks between the 2016-17 terms; He’s allowed one through nine starts, per Pro Football Focus (subscription required).

With his track record, turning 30 years old in August, Massie may play his last season in Chicago once the term ends. The Bears should consider signing a younger talent at the position.

At 26 years old, Ja’Wuan James has starting experience with the Miami Dolphins and possesses some upside. Primarily as a right tackle, he’s opened 56 games with his current team, though injuries are a concern. The fifth-year offensive lineman has missed 18 games.

The Bears may opt to draft a rookie as an alternative, but James would start immediately. He’s experienced his share of struggles in pass-blocking situations, but there’s room for improvement. The Tennessee product put together a strong 2016 campaign as a run blocker.

Pace shouldn’t break the bank for James, but at an approximate yearly average of $7 million, the Bears could have a decent right tackle for the short-term. It’s going to be slim pickings at the position during free agency.
