Dallas Cowboys: Kliff Kingsbury not a far fetched option

The Dallas Cowboys reportedly haven’t been thrilled with the work of offensive coordinator Scott Linehan and Kliff Kingsbury could be an upgrade in 2019

Sources have been reporting that Texas Tech will be moving on from head coach Kliff Kingsbury after they finished the season with five-straight losses. With him leaving, the dots are already being connected between the offensive-minded coach and the Dallas Cowboys.

Kingsbury has a short stint as a quarterback in the NFL, NFL Europe, and the CFL before getting into coaching. His playing career started at Texas Tech and his coaching career has also been relegated to the Lon Star State.

Kingsbury was an offensive coordinator at both Houston and Texas A&M before taking the lead job with the Red Raiders in 2013. During his time under the helm, he’s orchestrated some great offenses which included players like Baker Mayfield and Patrick Mahomes coming through his system — Mayfield of course transferred to Oklahoma after being beaten out by Mahomes.

Kingsbury also had Davis Webb at one point, which just shows that he knows how to find capable quarterbacks. He’s also very good at developing them in his system.

The ability to do that — while also being an innovative play caller — is exactly why he makes sense for a team like Dallas, who is desperately in need of some offensive creativity. That’s also why people like draft evaluator Jonah Tuls are on board for a Kingsbury-Dallas connection.

"“It’s because he has a proven track record of developing quarterbacks. Also, he is a really good playcaller. With the way the NFL is going, I think more and more teams will be receptive to someone like Kingsbury as an offensive coordinator. Not all great playcallers are great head coaches, and that was the case here. He will have no problem garnering interest around the NFL, and that’s where I think his next spot is.” — Tuls said via K.D. Drummond of Cowboys Wire/USA Today"

We all know how frustrating it has been to see Dak Prescott play in a system run by Scott Linehan. The current Dallas coordinator calls plays that are incredibly predictable and he’s also guilty of not tailoring his offense to Prescott’s strengths.

Yes, the quarterback has his faults as well, but this coaching staff is doing him no favors with their game plan. Because of this, there were reports that Linehan was nearly on the way out more than once.

His seat has cooled thanks to a three-game winning streak, but in reality, that likely only preserves Jason Garrett for 2019. If the head coach is wise, he will look at an up and coming offensive mind like Kingsbury to try and maximize the production of young quarterback.

The fact is the team likes Garrett and continues to fight for him. That’s part of the battle. But that won’t save him for much longer if something doesn’t change with their offense. Bringing in Kingsbury now won’t be something they can do — unless it is in some consulting role — but this could be a very real option in the offseason.
