The New York Giants dipped to 3-8 on the season with a 25-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles Sunday. Here we take a look at Big Blue’s report card.

The playoff dreams of the New York Giants are officially over. Big Blue traveled down I-95 to battle their NFC East rival, the Philadelphia Eagles, on Sunday afternoon and came away with a heartbreaking 25-22 setback.

The loss dropped the G-Men to 3-8 on the season and you can say adios to any playoff aspirations. The Eagles are 5-6 and still alive and kicking in the NFC East. The Giants have dropped five-straight games against Philly and nine of the last 10 in the all-time series.

Let’s take a look at the report card for Big Blue from the gut-punching loss.

Offense

What happened to New York’s offense in the second half? After rolling up 348 yards in the first half, the G-Men were held to just 54 in the second half when the Eagles rallied to victory. That’s totally unacceptable. Saquon Barkley was brilliant once again with 142 yards from scrimmage, including 101 on the ground, and two touchdowns.

Eli Manning enjoyed his third straight solid outing with 26 completions in 37 attempts for 297 yards and one touchdown. He did toss a poorly thrown interception though (Malcolm Jenkins). Manning was sacked just twice — New York’s offensive line has been performing better lately.

Odell Beckham Jr. caught five passes for 85 yards but failed to find the end zone. Their second half meltdown lowered this grade quite a bit, however.

Defense

The Giants finally came up with some sacks (three) against Carson Wentz, but failed to come up with any turnovers. Tight end Zach Ertz always destroys Big Blue and he did so once again (7-91-1). Can New York’s linebackers cover him over the middle and down the seam? Apparently, not even close.

The G-Men once again had numerous missed tackles and allowed halfback Josh Adams (22 rushes for 84 yards, one touchdown) to run amok at times. Landon Collins performed well with a team-high nine tackles, including two for loss, and a QB hit. Good defenses don’t blow an eight-point halftime lead. The G-Men are not a good defensive unit.

Aldrick Rosas drilled all three field goal attempts, including one from 51 yards away. He’s had a terrific overall campaign. Corey Coleman galloped 46 yards on one kickoff return and averaged 33.7 yards on three returns. He’s a dynamic, underrated player. Beckham, Jr. had a nice 16-yard punt return. Big Blue’s kickoff and punt coverage units were fine while Riley Dixon averaged 44.3 yards on a trio of punts.
