Round 2: T.J. Hockenson, TE, Iowa

Director of player personnel Stephen Jones recently mentioned safety and tight end as positions of need for the Cowboys, but we pretty much already knew that. Of the two positions, the one that’s the most glaring need is surely the tight end spot.

After Jason Witten retired, Dallas did a pretty poor job of trying to replace him. Heck, they did a poor job of being prepared for him to retire as they ignored a recent decline in his play and kept avoiding the position.

This offseason, for example, they didn’t even kick the tires on players like Eric Ebron when they became available. They also didn’t draft anyone until Round 4.

That can’t happen again in 2019, and in this mock, they address the issue with their first pick. That pick comes in the second after they sent their first-round pick to Oakland for the aforementioned Amari Cooper.

Iowa tight end T.J. Hockenson has shot up boards as the season has gone along. He’s the second tight end with Noah Fant garnering first-round attention, but Hockenson actually fits Dallas better. He’s an excellent blocker, but he’s also no slouch in the passing game.

A redshirt sophomore, Hockenson has 46 receptions for 717 yards and six touchdowns this season. He would be an immediate starter and quite the upgrade.
