Chicago Bears: ‘Santa’s Sleigh’ delivers early
By Randy Gurzi
The Chicago Bears rolled out a goal-line play that ended with a touchdown pass to lineman Bradley Sowell and we later learned it was called “Santa’s Sleigh”
Sunday Night Football provided the Chicago Bears a stage to put together their signature win this season. The leaders of the NFC North proved they were contenders as they knocked off the Los Angeles Rams in a defensive slugfest.
The final score was an ugly 15-6 mark, but it was the exact kind of game the Bears wanted to play against the normally high-flying Rams. Big name known for putting up points rolled into Chicago but the only touchdown in that game came not from Todd Gurley, Brandin Cooks or Jared Goff.
Instead, it was Bears offensive lineman Bradley Sowell who caught the lone score as he helped the Bears shock the Rams. What made that play even better was learning that Matt Nagy pulled out this play which was called “Santa’s Sleigh.”

Chicago set this up beautifully as just last week they ran the ball with Akiem Hicks, their 332-pound defensive end. This time, they had Hicks — along with three other defensive lineman and six offensive linemen — on the field and ran a fake. Mitchell Trubisky put the ball in Hicks’ gut, only to pull it back and roll out and fire the ball in Sowell’s direction.
To the credit of the Rams, they weren’t completely fooled as the 6-7 Sowell wasn’t wide open. Because of that, Trubisky had to go a little higher with the pass, which made it that much more impressive as the big man made the leaping grab for six.
Chicago is in full control of the NFC North and has their sights set on securing the No. 3 seed in the NFC. They hope to do more than just make it to the postseason though, and this win put other teams on notice that they’re for real.
They deserved this win as they were the better team on the night. And it was fitting that during this holiday season they got an early gift from “Santa’s Sleigh” as it delivered the only touchdown of the night.
