Depending on what happens with Adrian Amos this offseason, the Bears could be in need of some extra talent at safety. Despite their lack of draft picks, Chicago is going to have to invest in the position one way or another — during the 2019 NFL Draft seems sensible.

One name that should be on Ryan Pace’s draft board is Mike Edwards. The standout Kentucky safety has flown under the radar for much of his college career, but has spent the last two seasons working his way into NFL scouts’ minds. Could it be enough to convince the Bears to take a shot on him in the middle rounds?

It seems feasible, especially with the way he’s played in 2018.

Then again, what he’s done throughout his Kentucky career warrants a long look by the league. Over the last three seasons, Edwards has amassed 273 total tackles, nine interceptions and 21 pass deflections. He’s outstanding as both a run and pass defender, using his excellent instincts and athleticism to make plays all over the field.

The Bears have a number of young, developmental safeties already on the roster, but Deon Bush and DeAndre Houston-Carson haven’t exactly shined so far. Adding Edwards could be just what Chicago needs to find a potential replacement for Amos if he bails.
