After we all shrugged off a Super Bowl win, should we maybe rethink whether or not Nick Foles is the better option for the Philadelphia Eagles ahead of Carson Wentz?

No one expected the Philadelphia Eagles to win on Sunday Night Football. They were one loss away from being eliminated from the postseason and they had the high-flying Los Angeles Rams on the docket.

Then they did the unthinkable as they defeated the Rams, keeping their hopes at a postseason berth alive. It was not only a huge win for the team, but it continued to grow the legend of Nick Foles.

The Eagles backup quarterback didn’t throw a touchdown in the game, but he was 24-of-31 passing for 270 yards and was able to push the ball downfield as he did throughout the playoffs last year. Most importantly, he got Alshon Jeffery involved as the bug wideout had 160 yards on eight receptions.

With everyone clicking, they stole the win and now the question needs to again be asked — is Foles better than Carson Wentz?

When you break down the numbers, it’s easy to say Wentz is the guy. He was on an MVP pace last season before tearing his ACL, but wasn’t as good this season. While the numbers weren’t terrible, Wentz struggled to get wins.

So perhaps 2017 was an anomaly when Wentz was 11-2 as a starter. If so, we look at his numbers taking out that year.

The young quarterback was still very accurate as he completed 658-of-1008 passes for a 65.3 completion percentage. He also had 6,856 yards with 37 touchdowns and 21 picks. Sure, that’s a bit different than his 33 touchdowns and seven picks in 2017, but it shows he can still sling it.

As for Foles, the past two seasons he’s completed 135-of-214 passes for a 63.1 completion percentage. He’s managed 1,258 yards with six touchdowns and two picks.

Looking at the numbers says Wentz is the superior player, but the fact is this — the Eagles just keep winning with Foles. They’re 4-2 now in the regular season under him, with one of those losses coming in Week 17 of the 2017 season when Foles sat early as they had their playoff position secured.

Add in his 3-0 record in the playoffs and the Super Bowl win (he’s now 7-2 as a starter the past two years) and it’s not so crazy to ask if Foles may be the better option. Especially when you look at Wentz record outside of his MVP candidacy run. During Wentz’ two seasons outside of 2017, he has a record of just 12-15.

On top of this, Wentz has a long injury history dating back to his collegiate days at North Dakota State. That surely has to be concerning to the Eagles front office as well. Durability is the best ability after all.

Foles will be a free agent in the offseason and it’s going to be tough for the Eagles to decide what to do — especially if he wins out and Philadelphia once again makes it to the postseason after they looked dead in the water with Wentz.

So the answer is this — no, Foles is not a better quarterback than Wentz. However, the Eagles seem to respond to him better and he just keeps winning. So should they start wondering about who is the better long-term option? The next two weeks will answer that question.
