With the No. 1 seed in the NFC, the New Orleans Saints are exactly where they want to be. For Drew Brees, could it be his last chance at a ring?

2018 was a big year for the New Orleans Saints. Despite a slip up last January, the team pulled together and had an incredible season. A lot of credit goes to Drew Brees as he’s the face of the franchise and the leader of the team. With Brees turning 40 in less than two weeks, is this year his last chance at winning another Super Bowl?

Brees is, no doubt, a great guy on and off the field. It’s rare to see someone so talented and humble as he. There’s no denying how big 2018 was for him. Earlier this year, Brees was a free agent before eventually re-signing with the Saints. He was tempted by other teams, but stuck with New Orleans.

He’s been having an MVP-caliber season including throwing his 500th touchdown pass, setting the record for completion percentage in a single season and threw four touchdowns to four different undrafted free agents. Simply put, Brees was electric and victories over the Rams, Vikings and Eagles proved that.

All of that alone should secure Brees an MVP award. However, the second half of this year was rocky for the veteran quarterback. The trouble began when the Saints played the Dallas Cowboys in late November. It’s like the Saints were an entirely different team with Brees throwing for a touchdown plus an interception. Keep in mind: Brees had only thrown two before that game.

The Cowboys kept putting pressure on him and Brees wavered. It was hard to watch such a powerful team get taken down. If anything, it proved that the Saints had weaknesses but especially Brees. After their loss to the Cowboys, it felt like Brees lost all confidence in himself for the next three games.

Even though they won the next three games, Brees didn’t play nearly as well. He threw interceptions against the Buccaneers and the Panthers. He threw for little over 200 yards against the two teams. Considering his history with both teams, it was jarring to see Brees put together such a poor performance. Thankfully against the Steelers, Brees looked like his old self. He threw for zero interceptions, one touchdown and helped lead the team to a huge victory.

Overall, the season has been a mixed bag for Brees. With his 40th birthday approaching, it’s clear Brees is starting to look and feel his age. It looks like 2018 is Brees’ last chance at a Super Bowl before he hangs it up. Maybe he’ll come back in a blaze of glory in 2019. If he does, that’s going to be amazing. For now, it seems like 2018 is the year of Drew Brees and time for him to snag his second Super Bowl ring.
