The Los Angeles Chargers have done a fantastic job of keeping Philip Rivers upright this season. Offensive coordinator Ken Whisenhunt deserves a lot of credit for this, giving Rivers extra protection when necessary and focusing on a short and quick passing attack at times as well.

Their ability to give Rivers time was particularly impressive because of their lack of obvious talent at the offensive tackle position. Their current starting combination of Russell Okung and Sam Tevi leaves plenty to be desired and should be improved upon if at all possible.

In the second round of this mock draft, the Chargers find that opportunity by taking Wisconsin offensive tackle David Edwards.

Edwards is a former quarterback who came to Wisconsin as a tight end before finally putting on a ton of weight to become an offensive lineman. He eventually grew into an absolute stud up front, becoming an elite right tackle for the Badgers.

In particular, Edwards is a dominant run blocker who can consistently dominate up front with his raw strength and power. He also shows impressive quickness and natural athleticism for an offensive lineman, allowing him to reach the second level with ease.

Edwards is still learning a bit about the offensive line, and that shows up the most in pass protection. He struggles with consistent technique in his pass sets, over-reaching and exposing himself at times. Edwards undoubtedly has the raw skill-set to become a great pass protector, but there is certainly some work to do there.

If nothing else, Edwards should continue to be a dominant run blocker at the next level. If he can clean up his technique, there is no limit to his upside as an NFL offensive tackle.
