The Chargers were aggressive with their use of defensive backs last season. They regularly played three safeties throughout the season and started increasing their usage late in the year. The Chargers are not exactly loaded with talent at linebacker and replaced them many times with more talented players at the safety position.

If this is going to continue, the Chargers will have to add more talent in the secondary, particularly at safety. In the third round of this mock draft, the Los Angeles Chargers find an opportunity to improve their secondary by landing Florida safety Chauncey Gardner-Johnson.

Gardner-Johnson is an extremely versatile defensive back who shows an extremely well-rounded skill-set. At different times at Florida, CGJ shined all over the field. He has excelled as an in-the-box safety, showing the ability to tackle well and make plays against the run. He has also had some success as a slot defender, showing the necessary quickness and man-to-man coverage skills to make an impact.

CGJ is probably best suited as a deep safety if he is going to primarily play one position. The former Gator shows incredible natural range on the back-end and an impressive ability to make plays on the ball.

Simply put, Gardner-Johnson is a well-rounded athlete with a ton of natural upside at the next level. He could end up being an absolute steal here, but his lack of consistency in college is undoubtedly a concern. At times, CGJ does everything well, but getting him to do so on a consistent basis has been an issue.

If he can keep his effort up at all times, Gardner-Johnson is going to make a huge impact at the next level. The Los Angeles Chargers taking a chance on him here is a move that could pay off in a major way.
