Spencer Ware

Spencer Ware was the Seattle Seahawks’ sixth-round draft pick in the 2013 NFL Draft. He moved on to Kansas City to play in Nagy’s offense. In 2016, he had a pretty good season. He rushed 214 times for 921 yards. Additionally, he had 33 catches for 447 yards.

Ware was set to be the Chiefs’ starting running back when he suffered a knee injury. He missed the entire 2017 season. He came back this past season to back up Kareem Hunt and did a good job. He rushed 51 times for 246 yards. He added 20 catches for 224 yards. After Hunt got into trouble and the Chiefs cut him, Ware stepped in and started in Weeks 13 and 14 of the regular season. He had 29 carries for 122 yards and caught all six of his targets for 59 yards.

Having played in Nagy’s system Ware understands what a running back needs to do in that system. The learning curve isn’t as big for him and he can step in and do what’s needed to help the team.

Ware’s contract was about a $1.9 million salary cap hit. He can be had at a good value. Kansas City may want to bring him back but they also have Damien Williams. With Ware’s shoulder injury, they used Williams more down the stretch so they could decide to have him be their full-time running back next season. They won’t have to spend more money to re-sign him. In that case, Ware could be attractive for the Chicago Bears should he be healthy.
