Tyrann Mathieu, FS, Houston Texans

Realistically, this Green Bay secondary is only going to get better. After investing several early-round picks at cornerback during the last two offseasons, the future seems to be bright for the Packers’ defensive backfield.

With that said, it wouldn’t hurt to find more talent at the safety spot. Since they decided to trade away HaHa Clinton-Dix last season, it’s been a slog trying to find capable playmakers on the back end of the Green Bay defense. Luckily for the Packers, there are a few options available this offseason who fall into the “upgrade” category.

One I’m particularly fond of is Tyrann Mathieu. The Honey Badger is coming off a bounce-back season with the Houston Texans, turning that “prove it” contract into a trampoline after folks around the league feared hehis days of being a playmaking safety were behind him. That wasn’t the case, and the Houston defense benefited greatly from his presence.

As with most big-name free agents, though, the problem is Mathieu’s price tag. After earning a modest $7 million this past season, the former All-Pro safety is going to expect a raise when he signs his new contract. The Packers have spending power, but how much of it are they willing to invest in the safety position?

For the time being, let’s still mark Mathieu down as a top target. It may not work out from a cost-value standpoint, but you better believe he’d make a sizable impact for this Green Bay defense.
