Super Bowl 53: How many players are older than Sean McVay?
By Joe Kipp
Super Bowl 53 features a few players who are older than 33-year-old Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay. How many are there?
Just days removed from celebrating his 33rd birthday on Jan. 24, Sean McVay is headed to Super Bowl LIII in just his second season as head coach of the Los Angeles Rams. Such prodigious success this early in his career means there are bound to be at least a few players older than him. The only question is, how many?
After scanning both rosters, five combined players are older than McVay. The big game between the Los Angeles Rams and New England Patriots will showcase two Rams’ players and three Patriots’ players who are older than LA’s young, hotshot coach.
For the Rams, left tackle Andrew Whitworth (37) and center John Sullivan (33, born Aug. 8) both boast an older birth certificate than their head coach.

On the Patriots, wide receiver and special teams maestro Matthew Slater (33, born Sep. 9), kicker Stephen Gostowski (35) and quarterback Tom Brady (41) are older than McVay.
Since taking over as head coach of the Rams in 2017, McVay has led Los Angeles to a 24-8 regular season record and 2-1 postseason record. He also won AP Coach of the Year in 2017. McVay came over from the Washington Redskins, who he spent seven years with, most notably as offensive coordinator from 2014-16.
When the Rams hired McVay back in Jan. 2017, he had just turned 31-years-old. Initial concerns of ‘being a leader of men’ and ‘commanding a locker room’ were put to bed early, as McVay led the Rams to a playoff berth for the first time since 2004. It became pretty clear he was the right man for the job.
Sean McVay may not be oldest participant in Super Bowl 53, but he’ll unquestionably be one of the most respected. His innovative offense has Los Angeles flying into the big game with high hopes, but he’ll have to clash with Brady, Bill Belichick and an efficient New England defense if he’s to avoid being on the wrong side of history.
