Round 2, Pick 4: Mack Wilson, LB, Alabama

Last offseason, Lynch and company found an absolute gem in Fred Warner out of Brigham Young with the 70th overall pick in the draft. Warner only put up 124 tackles and six passes defended in his rookie campaign; pretty good numbers I guess.

Adding him to a staff already consisting of Malcolm Smith is a big reason why the 49ers ranked in the middle of the pack against the run. However, Mark Nzeocka often performed at a subpar level for the San Francisco defense. Adding one more linebacker along these two and a stout defensive line could elevate the Niners’ defense to the next level.

With the fourth pick in the second round, the Niners nab Mack Wilson out of Alabama. In two seasons as the starting Mike backer in Tuscaloosa, Wilson recorded a total of 113 tackles, seven of which for loss. In this mock, Wilson would be the third inside linebacker off of the board, behind only the Devins (White and Bush). Throughout his college career, Wilson also displayed an elite ability to play in pass coverage, intercepting a total of six passes over the past two seasons from his Mike spot.

Depending on how well Wilson tests in Indianapolis at the Combine, he could vault himself into the first round and possibly become the second backer off of the board ahead of Bush. It is also possible that three backers could be taken in the first round as well, but in this exercise, Wilson slips into the second and lands in San Francisco’s lap.
