Draft a No. 1 Wide Receiver

Before Colts fans get mad at this, I am not in any way bashing on T.Y. Hilton. Hilton is a great wide receiver. However, his size is not that of a typical top NFL wideout. Hilton is built more for vertical go routes and beating guys with his speed. His smaller size restricts him from being a dominant red zone threat or from being able to contest 50/50 balls against big corners. They need to find someone who can complement Hilton, not replace him.

A few weeks ago, I wrote about three Day 2 draft targets the Colts could pursue with one of their two second round picks. However, there is also a chance they could target a new No. 1 wide receiver with their first round pick.

Ole Miss’s D.K. Metcalf is being ranked consistently as the top wide receiver prospect in the draft. Metcalf posses freak athletic ability for his size and has all the desired traits teams look for. He has a few red flags (mostly medical), but will likely be a Round 1 pick. If he is available when the Colts are on the clock in the first round, he will certainly make them think about taking him. Adding someone like Metcalf would make the Colts one of the most lethal offenses in the league.

Arizona State’s N’Keal Harry is also a prospect the Colts could look at in the first round. Harry had an elite college career and should be high on the Colts’ draft board.

Whether the Colts go wide receiver in Round 1 or 2, they have to address their wide receiver issue. Guys like Ryan Grant and Dontrelle Inman are good role players, but not cut out for full-time WR1 playing time. The Colts already had one of the leagues best offenses in 2018, but it still has room to improve. With no real intriguing options in free agency, the Colts have to turn to the draft to find a receiver.
