Should the Green Bay Packers trade down from No. 12 pick?
The Green Bay Packers already have a ton of assets, but they could add more by trading down a few spots from the 12th overall pick in the 2019 NFL Draft.
The Green Bay Packers currently have 10 picks in the 2019 NFL Draft as things sit currently, which includes two first-round picks. Their top one has them at No. 12 overall, and they could look to trade down out of that spot if they aren’t in love with the players on the board at that time.
One rumored option has been for them to trade down with either the Miami Dolphins or Washington Redskins who could be looking to jump up a few spots to grab their quarterback of the future.
The Redskins could look to swap picks with the Packers to jump in front of Miami for a player like Kyler Murray or Drew Lock. The team could swap firsts while Washington would likely have to add a third-round pick to make that happen. Green Bay is looking to add players at a number of positions, and another top-100 pick would give them the power to do that. The Packers would also still be able to add a player at a position of need with that trade down.

Players like Jachai Polite, Brian Burns and Montez Sweat at the edge rusher position are all still likely to to be on the board when they make their pick. Some have even thought Green Bay could look to address the offensive side of the ball with a tight end or a wide receiver with their first pick, which they could be more comfortable with at No. 15 rather than 12.
In last year’s draft, Green Bay had the 14th pick, but they traded down to No. 27 to add a future asset before trading back up. General manager Brian Gutekunst is not afraid to move down in the draft, because he knows that having more swings at the plate is not a bad thing at all. Maybe he would like that additional third-round pick over the guys on the board when they’re picking at 12.
This has been viewed as a really deep draft at a number of positions. Some of the deeper ones, such as wide receiver, tight end and edge rusher are positions that Green Bay needs to upgrade. So, if the clock starts and you don’t like the players on the board at your spot, why wouldn’t you trade down? Why draft a player that you think will be there in three or four spots when you could add a pick later and still get the get you want.
If Green Bay is in love with a guy like Polite, Clelin Ferrell, T.J. Hockenson or any other number of players at No. 12, they shouldn’t trade down just for the sake of doing so. When you can the guy that you want is on the board, you draft him while you can. Teams that get too cute in the draft are the same ones that end up reaching for a player just to fill a need because they missed out on the player they actually wanted.
This seems like the type of draft where the Packers could easily trade down a few spots in the first before trading up in the second or third round using their extra picks. Outside of the top five or so players on the board, there aren’t any huge can’t miss players. Green Bay isn’t going to be trading up into that group, so they could easily trade down to a team that is overly aggressive for a player they feel they need.
