I recently wrote an article about some possible running back prospects the Chicago Bears should target. I am high on Darrell Henderson and David Montgomery. Montgomery was the player available here. Some say that the draft is thin at the running back position. I believe some of these players will surprise many in the NFL.

When you look at Montgomery you don’t see a superstar in any way. He is not flashy and he doesn’t own breakaway speed. What he does have, however, is great instincts and he uses them well. He sees the play progressing as he runs and gets to the hole just as it opens up.

Those instincts helped him lead the nation in missed tackles (107) in 2017. His contact balance is also very good. He gets low and gets good leverage so he’s difficult to bring down. Because of that, he had back-to-back 1,000-yard rushing seasons.

At 5-11, 219 pounds, Montgomery has the body to take the punishment he’ll receive in the NFL. He has nice soft hands that allow him to play a big part of the passing game.

Despite playing behind a less than stellar offensive line, Montgomery still ran for 2,925 yards and averaged 4.7 yards per carry in his career. He also had 26 rushing touchdowns. Playing behind a better line in Chicago could help him bloom as a professional.
