Jacksonville Jaguars: 7-Round 2019 mock draft pre-Combine
By Larry Brake
Round 1: Dwayne Haskins, QB, Ohio State
Dwayne Haskins has to be Caldwell’s pick in the first round. Haskins is projected as the best prospect at quarterback in this 2019 NFL Draft. Many think that Kyler Murray is too small to be durable.
Haskins stands 6-3, weighing 220 pounds. He is the prototypical size that minimizes the risk of drafting him. Caldwell would rather miss on Haskins instead of taking a risk/blame on missing on a sub-6-0 quarterback. At Ohio State, Haskins completed 70 percent of his passes, completing 413 of 590 for 5,396 yards with 54 touchdowns and nine interceptions. How would he figure in the Jaguars plan?
Tom Coughlin recently stated that Blake Bortles is the starting quarterback “right now” per NFL.com. Has the front office duo of Coughlin and Caldwell decided to keep Bortles as the bridge quarterback? Remember, cutting Bortles (dead money) and signing Nick Foles (market value) would drastically affect their salary cap situation.
Do not be surprised if the Jaguars release Cody Kessler and Tanner Lee soon. Jacksonville might go forward with Bortles, Haskins and Alex McGough. In following of the Kansas City model, let Haskins sit under Bortles to learn and get accumulated to the pro game. It worked with Patrick Mahomes, so it should with Haskins, right?
