The Chicago Bears decided to keep one of their fans’ favorite players, Kyle Long, by agreeing to restructure his contract.

The Chicago Bears‘ offseason is getting into full swing. They made a move on one of the fanbase’s favorite player, Kyle Long, by agreeing to a restructured contract.

The restructure frees up some much-needed cap space for the Bears, although terms weren’t disclosed yet. Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune speculated that there could be per-game roster bonuses for Long so he could recoup some of his money.

Long burst on the scene as the Bears’ first-round pick in the 2013 draft. He was a Pro Bowl player and a second-team All-Pro in his first three seasons, missing only one game. The last three have been a struggle for him, however. He’s suffered through shoulder, elbow, ankle, and foot injuries that kept him out of 22 of the Bears’ last 48 games.

Long expressed for a while now his desire to retire a Chicago Bears. This restructure probably makes that happen. It makes the team, Long and the fans happy. The Bears get salary cap relief. Long remains on the team he loves so much. Finally, the fans can still cheer for their favorite player.

Long’s been a team leader, saying things that take off some of the pressure from his teammates. He’ll take the hits if he says something that causes waves with the media. If something needs to be said, he has no problem saying it.

An important thing to note is that this offseason Long doesn’t have any surgeries to recover from. It’s the first time in three years that’s happened. He’s free to work on his total body strengthening and not just rehabbing certain injuries. Hopefully, that bodes well for the upcoming season.

When he’s on the field he is a great leader and easily the best lineman the Bears have. It’ll be great to see him on the field again in a Chicago Bears uniform. Hopefully, he returns to his old self and experiences winning some big games after he’s experienced a lot of losing.
