3. Brian Burns, EDGE, Florida State

Brian Burns has been one of the top rumored names for Green Bay in the pre-draft process, and this week at the NFL Combine is going to be huge for him in a couple of different ways. He played in college at about 235 pounds. He was very explosive, but that isn’t a big enough size to be effective in the NFL. Sources around him have claimed that he has put on about 10-15 pounds in preparation for the combine, but it remains to be seen if that is true.

If he comes in at 245 or 250 pounds, but lacks the explosiveness that has made him a possible first-round pick, he’s going to move down boards. The same goes if he didn’t really put on weight but he’s still explosive.

He needs to show that he can come in like other edge rushers, such as Jachai Polite out of Florida, that he can be big an explosive. NFL tackles can move around 230-pound guys with ease, and Burns would be washed out of the NFL in a hurry.

If Burns comes in with that extra weight and tests well, he will become arguably the third edge defender on the board behind Kentucky’s Josh Allen and Ohio State’s Nick Bosa. He has a relentless motor when he’s on the field, and he could be the Packers best edge rusher for a while, but it all comes down to those measurements. Keep an eye on him on March 3 when he gets out there.
