Round 2: Charles Omenihu, DT, Texas

Last season, Dallas was hoping to have David Irving playing at the three-technique, but they were cautiously optimistic. Irving played just eight games the prior year as he dealt with a suspension to begin the season and concussion symptoms caused him to miss another four games. Even though he played just half a season, Irving was one of their best pass rushers and finished the year with seven sacks.

Unfortunately, he never got to continue his development as Irving again started 2018 on the suspended list. He followed that up with a myriad of off-field problems and barely saw the field for America’s Team. Now a free agent — and indefinitely suspended — the team will want to move on and adding another player who can fill his role will help and they may have tipped their hand as to one person they’re considering.

According to Jon Machota of Dallas News, the Cowboys spent some time with Charles Omenihu out of Texas. They then had an informal visit with him and it wouldn’t be surprising to see him attend their annual Dallas Day where local prospects come in for a visit before the draft.

Omenihu had a career-high 9.5 sacks for the Longhorns in 2018 but still has some scouts confused as to his role in the NFL. He’s built like a big defensive end, but his testing doesn’t wow anyone at that spot. However, as a defensive tackle, he could end up being a solid fit. For Dallas, they have to decide if they like him there and if so, he could end up being a contributor early for their steadily improving defense.
