Round 3: Johnathan Abram, S, Mississippi State

Right now, the biggest need on the Cowboys roster is arguably safety and they absolutely need to add talent and depth to that spot. With that being said, there are a lot of veteran options available in free agency and Dallas could elect to go that route to fill this void.

The biggest name they’ve been linked to is easily Earl Thomas, who has spent his entire career with the Seattle Seahawks. Should they land him, it would reunite the former All-Pro with his former defensive coordinator Kris Richard, while also bringing him home to Texas.

Even if they add Thomas, Dallas would be wise to address the spot with someone who could end up being a starter, especially given his age and the fact that the rest of the depth chart isn’t full of all-stars either. One target to build competition at the spot could be Johnathan Abram from Mississippi State. Like others in this mock, Abram met with the Boys during the Scouting Combine. He also does a good job selling himself to potential teams.

"“I’m pretty much comfortable wherever you put me: down in the box, out playing man-to-man, in the slots or even at free. … Whatever works for you, I’m going to make it work for me.” — Abram via Jon Machota of Dallas News"

In his final season, Abram was able to put it all together. He finished with 99 tackles, three sacks, and two interceptions for the Bulldogs and added five pass deflections. Dallas hasn’t put enough resources into this position for years and should finally do so this offseason.
