Under new defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo, the Kansas City Chiefs will be switching to a 4-3 defense next season. They have a lot of strong pieces in place to make this change, but they lack depth at the defensive end position for their new scheme.

Dee Ford or Justin Houston (and perhaps both) are unlikely to be back next season. This will leave a massive hole on the edge for the Chiefs, and while they have some young talent who may step up and make an impact, they need to at least add some quality depth in free agency.

Benson Mayowa stands out as a strong low-cost option for this team. He has had success as a 4-3 defensive end in the past, piling up six sacks in limited time with the Dallas Cowboys in 2018 and four sacks in limited time with the Arizona Cardinals last season.

Mayowa is primarily known for his ability to get pressure on the quarterback with a solid combination of power and athleticism. However, he really improved as a run defender last season, showing a consistent ability to set the edge and make the occasional tackle behind the line of scrimmage (11 TFL last season).

Adding Mayowa to the mix would not grab many headlines, but he would be a solid depth piece who could help the Chiefs both in their base 4-3 defense and in sub packages. For a player who is not expected to strike it rich on the open market, he could be a major addition to the Chiefs at a position of need.
