Tashaun Gipson

Released by the Jacksonville Jaguars last week, veteran safety Tashaun Gipson enters the deep pool of free agent safeties ready to get paid on the open market. In a class with Landon Collins, Tyrann Mathieu, Earl Thomas and HaHa Clinton-Dix, Gipson may be the best bang-for-your-buck option.

Make no mistake, the 28-year old safety is still a ball hawk and has been for his entire career. Throughout his seven year career to this point, Gipson has tallied a massive 20 interceptions, returning two for touchdowns. He was named to a Pro Bowl in 2014 as a member of the Cleveland Browns, tallying six interceptions in 10 games before tearing his ACL.

The Niners are in desperate need of an upgrade to their secondary and adding Gipson to play next to Jaquiski Tartt in the back of the defense would be a great start. With Richard Sherman at the corner spot, the Niners would then have the makings of a formidable defensive secondary.

Gipson’s services could probably be obtained for anywhere between $6-8 million annually, which considering the market where Thomas wants $15 million per year, would be a great value for the 49ers if they choose to go the less expensive route at the safety position.
