Round 1, Pick 6: Brian Burns, EDGE, Florida State

While trading Beckham has left the offense in a bad position, the Giants defense isn’t looking much better either. Whether it be in the front seven or in the secondary, there are massive holes. Landon Collins leaving in free agency certainly doesn’t help matters, and trading away Vernon is not a great look for the defense either. The latter, however, leaves them bare at arguably the most important position on defense: edge pass rusher.

Though the Giants took Lorenzo Carter in the third round last year out of Georgia, he made little impact as a rookie. Furthermore, there is little to no depth around Carter that is going to make a difference with any kind of consistency. Given that and the fact that this edge class in the 2019 NFL Draft is so deep, they get one of the best in the class here with the sixth-overall pick in Brian Burns.

The biggest question that Burns had to answer entering the NFL Combine was regarding his size as he looked slight at Florida State. Weighing in at 249 pounds and still posting a 4.53-second 40-yard dash time and ranking in the 82nd percentile for edge rushers in the 3-cone drill (per MockDraftable), however, showed that those concerns were not warranted and that he should be valued as one of the best edge rushers in this 2019 class.

Burns is perhaps the second-most polished pass-rusher among an elite group as he enters the NFL. While he’s not going to make anyone think he’s a bull-rusher, he has a wide arsenal of pass-rush moves that utilize his big wingspan and speed to beat tackles off the edge. Putting him in the Giants’ 3-4 defense as a rush linebacker would give Big Blue’s defense a massive weapon that they currently don’t have anything close to.
