Round 2, Pick 58: Gerald Willis, DT, Miami

One move Dallas did make early in the process was to sign defensive tackle Christian Covington, formerly of the Houston Texans. This move was met with a bit of a yawn from fans but it was really an underrated move. While Covington served as a backup for Houston, he’s now the highest graded defensive tackle on the Cowboys roster, according to Pro Football Focus.

He was even better in 2017 than this past season, but Covington really stands out as a great run defender — which Dallas could have used against the Los Angeles Rams in the playoffs this past season.

With Covington on the team, the Cowboys defensive line is better, but they need more. Here, they draft Gerald Willis III, who is the younger brother of Landon Collins who plays safety for the Washington Redskins. Willis is more of a three-technique who can help generate an interior pass rush.

Adding him, along with the Covington addition, also helps Dallas at defensive end. Tyrone Crawford is an underrated player at right end but he’s also had to bounce from one position to another his whole career.

With Randy Gregory suspended, he will be needed at defensive end more than ever before. Putting some good players on the field to handle the tackle spot will allow him to stay at one spot, thus maximizing his effectiveness.
