Round 3, Pick 68: Elgton Jenkins, IOL, Mississippi State

It is not a secret to anyone who even remotely watches NFL football that the front five of the Jets offensive line is in complete disarray. While they re-signed interior lineman Jonnothan Harrison to an extension this offseason, the Jets have already cut last year’s starting guard Spencer Long, and Brian Winters remains expendable as well.

Even after adding Kelechi Osemele, the interior offensive lineman class is getting deeper as the pre-draft process rolls on, and the Jets get a late riser here in the third.

Elgton Jenkins put on quite a steady performance in Indianapolis, making NFL Draft scouts and talent evaluators go back and take another look at his tape. While he did not run the 40-yard dash, Jenkins ranked in the 71st percentile in the 20 yard shuttle and nearly the top 80th percent in the bench press with 29 reps. Looking as smooth as anyone during on-field positional drills, Jenkins’ hip flexibility, agility and lateral movement stood out in his group.

After adding a ton of talent to their skill positions, the Jets must hit the offensive line hard in the upcoming draft if they want to have any hopes of competing and keeping their franchise quarterback upright. Adding Jenkins in the third round would be of great value to the Jets as they look to improve the interior of the trenches.
