Round 3, Pick 93: Isaiah Johnson, CB, Houston

Another position that was not addressed heavily in free agency was the cornerback position, other than choosing to let Morris Claiborne walk. Last offseason, the Jets broke the bank for Trumaine Johnson, who has paid dividends, but this year they will have to address the position in the top half of the draft.

Unlike the interior of the offensive line, the combine exposed this year’s crop of cornerbacks as an overhyped group with a lot to prove between now and April. In fact, there is real steam building that not a single corner could be taken in the top-20. In addition, it does not seem like the gap between the Deandre Bakers and Greedy Williams of the class and some athletic sleepers is all that wide.

Here with their second third round selection, the Jets snag Houston cornerback Isaiah Johnson after measuring in the 93rd percentile or above in height, weight, wingspan, and arm length. Johnson has the athleticism to match his size as well, ranking in the 96th percentile in the broad jump and running a 4.4-secon 40 yard dash. He has all of the makings of a lockdown corner at the next level.

While Johnson may be a bit raw in his technique, he has the desirable size and athleticism to make any team take a chance on him. At the end of the third round, the Jets are the team to let their coaching staff work their magic on Johnson in hopes that he develops into a physical, shutdown corner in the Big Apple.
