This offseason, the Rams saw their share of defensive players leave the club either via free agency or had their contract terminated by the team. The latter was the case for Mark Barron, a one-time safety of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who solely but surely made the fulltime conversion to inside linebacker for his new team.

Unfortunately, he wasn’t necessarily a great fit in current coordinator Wade Phillips’ defensive scheme and, despite playing better in the 2018 postseason, he was given his walking papers by the reigning NFC champions.

In the secondary, free safety Lamarcus Joyner opted to join the Oakland Raiders via free agency. While the club locked up pass-rusher Dante Fowler Jr. before he could hit the open market, the club has not resigned veteran defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh.

Back to inside linebacker. An ideal addition to Phillips’ unit might have been inside linebacker Brandon Marshall, who is certainly familiar with the veteran coach’s system. But he just inked a one-year deal with the Raiders.

While he has bounced around the league the last few seasons, Zach Brown has always been a playmaker wherever he has suited up. The 29-year old pro comes off a 2018 season with the Washington Redskins in which he totaled 96 tackles, to go along with one sack and a pair of forced fumbles. The Rams recently added versatile linebacker Clay Matthews, who’s expected to see time both inside and outside. Brown would give the team another solid option.
