2019 NFL Draft: Complete 7-round mock draft
By Randy Gurzi
15. Washington Redskins: Montez Sweat, EDGE, Mississippi State
After losing Preston Smith in free agency, the Washington Redskins find his replacement here with Montez Sweat out of Mississippi State — the same school that produced Smith. Sweat was a solid edge rusher the past two seasons for the Bulldogs after transferring from Michigan State, but it was his performance at the Scouting Combine that solidified him as an early first-round pick.
Listed at 6-6 and 260 pounds, Sweat showed off amazing athleticism during the pre-draft workout. He ran a shocking 4.42-second 40-yard dash before putting up 36 inches in the vertical jump. His length and speed make him an ideal fit for the Redskins 3-4 defense.
As for the team themselves, they could be relying heavily on the defense this season. Last year they went out and picked up Alex Smith but a gruesome broken leg put his chances of playing in 2019 in jeopardy. That led to them going for Case Keenum in free agency.
While Keenum has won plenty of games in the NFL in his career, he’s always needed a strong running game as well as a good defense to help him out. After already landing safety Landon Collins in free agency, Washington could have a good enough defense to help them notch some victories.
