Regardless of all the strides that have made been made by the New Orleans Saints’ defense these past two seasons, cornerback seems to be still seems to be an area concern for coordinator Dennis Allen’s unit. Truth be told, every team in the NFL could use a little more help in the secondary given the rules these days.

This past year, the Saints were ranked 29th in the league against the pass, some of that due to the fact that the team was playing with big leads on numerous occasions. Still, the club could use another veteran or two in this area.

Yes, the team did re-sign four-year pro P.J. Williams to a one-year contract this week. And the club also added former Minnesota Vikings’ cornerback Marcus Sherels, who figures to be a bigger factor on punt returns.

One of the better comeback stories in the NFL in 2018 was the return of one-time Green Bay Packers’ standout Sam Shields, who returned to the NFL after missing nearly two seasons after suffering several concussions. He spent 2018 with the eventual conference champion Los Angeles Rams, playing in all 16 games and finishing with 19 tackles, one interception and four passes defensed while contributing on special teams as well.
