5. Wide Receiver

Last season was a weird one for the Cowboys at the wide receiver position. First, they released Dez Bryant before the season began and tried to sell us on the notion that they didn’t need a No. 1 wideout. That proved to be wrong as their featured corps of Allen Hurns, Tavon Austin, Michael Gallup, Cole Beasley, and Deonte Thompson didn’t scare any defenses. It also didn’t put many points on the board.

Understanding they made a mistake, Dallas went out and traded their first-round pick in this draft for Amari Cooper. His arrival changed everything as every receiver started to have an easier job with all eyes being on him. On top of that, Cooper produced as well and made life easier on Dak Prescott.

With him, Randall Cobb, Hurns, Austin, and Gallup back this season the Cowboys look to be in much better shape. They also technically spent their top pick on a receiver this season. Still, the position could be addressed in the draft.

The main issue is that only Gallup is under contract beyond this season which means they could be in rough shape once the year ends. Sure, they will likely come to terms with Cooper on an extension before then, but they would still only be two deep.

They don’t need to go after this one with their top pick, but somewhere in the upcoming draft, it would be wise to add some developmental youth at wideout.
