Round 1, Pick 17: Brian Burns, EDGE, Florida State

The Giants are on the clock again in the first round as they obtained the No. 17 overall pick from the Cleveland Browns in exchange for Odell Beckham, Jr. In addition to this pick, New York also received the No. 95 pick in this draft and starting strong safety Jabrill Peppers.

Trading away a talent such as OBJ couldn’t have been an easy decision. There’s also plenty of reason to question if it was a good one. Beckham was one of the more difficult players in all of the NFL to cover and will leave a big hole on the roster.

Another hole was created by an earlier trade with the Browns. Before making the OBJ move, New York sent edge rusher Olivier Vernon to Cleveland in exchange for guard Kevin Zeitler. This one was a pretty solid move for both teams, but New York will need more help on the edge now.

They added Markus Golden, but he’s had injury problems and shouldn’t be their No. 1 pass rusher. In an effort to ensure they can get after the quarterback, they take Brian Burns here with the 17th overall pick.

Coming out of Florida State, Burns is a smooth and athletic player on the edge who increased his stock dramatically at the combine. Listed at 235 pounds while at FSU, Burns showed up to the Combine at 249 pounds. More importantly, he didn’t lose any of his explosion as he still ran a 4.53-second 40-yard dash despite the added bulk.
