Back to the defensive line in the fourth round, as the Miami Dolphins scoop up Daniel Wise out of Kansas. Wise is a long and strong defensive lineman who shows some real upside as a one-gap penetrator at the next level.

His first step quickness and upfield burst immediately stand out on tape, both against the run and as a pass rusher. He also has solid bend and overall athleticism and wins often with quick counter moves in the pass rush. He is a high motor player who can compete against the run and has some nice pass rush upside. Wise is best suited as a three-tech defensive tackle who is simply asked to penetrate as a one-gap defender at the next level.

In the fifth round, the Miami Dolphins select Ryan Bates, adding another offensive lineman into the mix. Bates primarily played left tackle in college but has some experience at guard. His lack of arm length makes him a likely interior offensive line prospect at the next level, which stands out as an obvious need for Miami.

Bates shows some nice foot quickness in short spaces and has a strong punch at the point of attack. He is not the most overpowering player, but has enough functional strength to compete at the next level. Bates is most impressive when used as a pull blocker, moving well in space and consistently locating and attacking the correct target.

He struggles in pass protection at times, but that is typically when he is taking deep vertical drops. When allowed to set up quickly, Bates had much more success which bodes well for his transition inside. The Dolphins find a capable offensive line prospect in the fifth round who could compete for some early playing time at guard.
