The New York Jets are reportedly trying to trade back from the No. 3 pick in the 2019 NFL Draft and that’s the move that needs to be made.

Even with less than a week until the 2019 NFL Draft begins on April 25, there is very little consensus as to how things will get underway with the first two picks. After those two selections, though, the New York Jets will be on the clock with the third-overall pick. According to reports, despite the uncertainty ahead of them, they know exactly what they want to do at No. 3: Trade down.

Per Ralph Vacchiano of SNY, the Jets are “determined” to trade back in the 2019 NFL Draft from the third pick. One NFL executive told Vacchiano that the pick certainly seemed to be “for sale”, even if it is just the Jets trying to “keep their options open.”

There is going to be a premium player that could help the Jets available with the No. 3 pick. Whether that player is Quinnen Williams, Nick Bosa, Jawaan Taylor or someone else, there is elite talent at the top of this draft. However, the “determination” to trade back from general manager Mike Maccagnan is wholly the right move for the organization.

Despite a busy offseason in free agency that saw the Jets ink the likes of Le’Veon Bell and C.J. Mosley, in addition to complementary pieces like Jamison Crowder and Henry Anderson, this team is still not a complete group around rising second-year quarterback Sam Darnold. They still need to upgrade their offensive line, still have holes at edge rusher and elsewhere on the defense and could use more trusted weapons in the passing game.

This isn’t a team that is one elite prospect away from competing for the AFC Championship or a Super Bowl. Instead, the Jets are a franchise that needs to continue to add as many valuable assets as they possibly can, which trading the third-overall pick would help them accomplish.

The Jets don’t have a second-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft, which robs them of an opportunity to take a top-50 player in this class. By trading down, they could potentially change that and, thus, add two quality starters to fill holes on their roster whereas the No. 3 pick would only allow them to address one of those needs, and likely with a player who isn’t miles better than who they could still nab in the first round after trading down.

Put simply, as the Jets continue to build around Sam Darnold, they need to not rush the plan along too much and remain smart in their approach. Trading back in the 2019 draft fits the bill in that regard, which is why they’re making the right call in trying to do so.
