Jacksonville Jaguars: Is there a trade market for Jalen Ramsey?
By Larry Brake
Have the antics of Jalen Ramsey over the past few months hampered the Jacksonville Jaguars’ ability to trade him, if that’s what they want?
Tom Coughlin called out Jalen Ramsey and Telvin Smith for missing voluntary workouts on Thursday. Evidently, they were the only two Jacksonville Jaguars players to miss such workouts. Given this among a list of other instances, if the Jaguars tried to trade Ramsey right now, would there be a market for the cornerback?
Remember what a team would be getting if they were to take on Ramsey. They would get an elite shutdown cornerback — but also, the team would get all his continuing drama. Who wants more drama in their locker room?
First of all, Ramsey does plenty of trash talking on the field. He is able to get under the skin of opposing wide receivers. Just ask Steve Smith or A.J. Green, both of whom were ready to fight Ramsey on the playing field. Ramsey has the propensity to speak his mind when asked. Last summer, his interview with GQ fired up opposing quarterbacks. Even in defeat, Ramsey fired back towards Buffalo’s Josh Allen.

Perhaps Ramsey is getting under Coughlin’s skin as well. Ramsey is in the fourth year of his rookie contract. Jacksonville is getting an elite defender on a cheap contract. Will the Jaguars be able to satisfy Ramsey’s contract demands once this deal is up, though? Should Jacksonville trade Ramsey for additional draft picks? As great a player as he is, who wants all his drama? Even the great Deion Sanders played for several teams.
Ramsey responded to Coughlin by saying that he “would be ready when it’s time”. Michael DiRocco of ESPN.com reports the following:
"It’s not a surprise that Ramsey isn’t in attendance because he didn’t participate last year, either, choosing instead to remain in Nashville and work out at his father’s training facility. It was a surprise that Smith wasn’t there, though, because he had attended the voluntary offseason program every year since he was drafted in 2014 and the team had no indication that he wasn’t planning to attend."
Jacksonville could easily move on from Smith, but Ramsey is different. Smith might get dealt away during the draft. The price tag for Ramsey might be too expensive for most teams.
Expect Jacksonville to select a cornerback in this upcoming draft. They have four picks in the first three rounds. Could they find Ramsey’s replacement this year and let Ramsey walk away into the free agent market in 2021? If Coughlin and the front office are tired of the drama, they potentially could at least try.
