Scouting Report. John Cominsky. 44. Pick Analysis. DE. Charleston (WV). 135. player

It’s hard to be too positive about the work the Atlanta Falcons did in this draft. The good news is they added two offensive linemen, finally realizing what an issue the right side of their line was. However, they seemed to reach for both, especially Washington offensive tackle Kaleb McGary.

Not only does it seem high to have taken him at No. 31 overall, but it also cost them the No. 45 and the No. 59 overall picks to move up for a guy that PFF had as the No. 65 overall player on their board.

More from NFL Spin Zone

"“Washington offensive tackle Kaleb McGary, a 6-foot-7 specimen with desirable athleticism, landed at No. 65 on PFF’s board. He is a dominant run blocker but needs to improve in pass protection to truly thrive in the NFL.” — PFF Analysis team"

As for the Falcons’ biggest steal, that ends up being John Cominsky. A big defensive end from Charleston (West Virginia), Cominsky tested off the charts at the NFL Scouting Combine. The problem is, he played at a small school, so it likely won’t be this season where he makes his biggest impact.

The Falcons understand how big of a season this is for head coach Dan Quinn and general manager Thomas Dimitroff. Giving so much attention to the offensive line shows they believe they’re close and just need to be stronger. Still, that hurt their overall draft, as they surrendered a lot of stock for the second of two linemen they chose.
