With the 13th pick of the 2019 NFL Draft, the Dolphins selected defensive tackle Christian Wilkins out of Clemson. The selection of Wilkins was not only a “safe” pick, but he was wildly considered the third best defensive tackle in the draft. While not an elite athlete like Ed Oliver, Wilkins does bring some solid athletic traits to the table with his 6-3, 315-pound frame.
As a three-technique, he has the desired quickness and first step to shoot the gap. He’s slippery and understands how to get skinny, making him an asset on third downs. But the Dolphins aren’t expected to limit him to just defensive tackle.
As a matter of fact, with Brian Flores hailing from the New England Patriots where they utilized multiple fronts, new defensive coordinator Patrick Graham (Packers) is expected to employ the same philosophy. The good news is, Wilkins’ résumé at Clemson shows his versatility, While at Clemson, Wilkins lined up at base end at times. He proved that he can use a power rush to get the quarterback. And he’s also strong and long enough to set the edge against the run.
Flores undoubtedly appreciates the value of a versatile prospect, in addition to a prospect who also brings fire and leadership qualities. Wilkins is a Day 1 starter who can develop into a really good player.
