3. Daniel Wise, DT, Kansas
Despite signing Christian Covington and Kerry Hyder this offseason, defensive tackle was a clear need for the Dallas Cowboys entering the 2019 NFL Draft. They recognized this and made it their top priority as they selected Trysten Hill with the 58th overall pick, their first selection of the proceedings. Hill should see meaningful snaps right away as a rotational piece around Maliek Collins, Tyrone Crawford and Antwaun Woods, among others.

While Hill is a great addition, this is a group that has needed bolstering in a big way for some time, even more so now with the David Irving debacle still ongoing. That’s why adding a player like Daniel Wise in undrafted free agency could have a big impact on the Cowboys defense moving forward.
Throughout his entire collegiate career with the Kansas Jayhawks, Wise proved to be a productive player that lived in opposing backfields. Over four seasons, he totaled 17 sacks and 43 tackles for loss, including 28 tackles for loss over his final two seasons with the Jayhawks. While he was not totally consistent on film, he showed flash after flash of NFL caliber penetration at defensive tackle.
Because of Kansas’ defense’s lack of quality, though, Wise was asked to wear too many hats. If asked to simply be a 3-tech in Dallas, he could shine in a big way as a pass-rush threat on the interior. There’s a very good chance that he not only makes the roster, but could earn snaps in the rotation at defensive tackle as a rookie.
