3. S Josh Jones

After two seasons, Josh Jones has struggled to really develop his skills. He’s athletic, and he does a great job when he’s playing downhill. The problem is that the team already has a guy like that with Adrian Amos after signing him in free agency.

Now, the Packers have also added Darnell Savage Jr. in the first round to play the other safety spot. That doesn’t leave any snaps for Jones on the back end, and they could be more content to develop last year’s third-round pick Oren Burks for the inside linebacker spot.

Jones does a decent job as an in-the-box linebacker, but they’re looking for combo guys that can also cover running backs and tight ends. He can hold his own somewhat in that area, but he doesn’t work well when he’s out in space. Green Bay also drafted an athletic marvel this year at the inside linebacker spot in Ty Summers. They waited until the seventh round to do it, but it doesn’t matter when the guy plays the game similarly to Jones.

Jones will need to show he’s made great strides this offseason and into training camp to show why he deserves a roster spot next year. His dead cap number for this year and next combined is less than $1 million. The team would have no problem eating that number to open up a roster spot for a player they like better. Jones better be working hard this offseason to keep his spot safe.
