Montgomery looks ready to take snaps away from veterans

When the Chicago Bears picked up David Montgomery, the plan appeared to be having him and Mike Davis split the load and having Tarik Cohen and Cordarrelle Patterson play gadget backs there.

More from NFL Spin Zone

After this weekend, however, Montgomery looks like he could be the featured back. He entered the minicamp with an incredible focus that caught Nagy’s attention, per the Chicago Tribune:

"He’s extremely focused when he’s in practice, which I love. He’s very dialed into whatever his assignment is. He loves being out here. It’s not a lot of running going on right now, but when he gets the chance to get that football, he sprints through that hole, he makes some cuts, makes some moves and he’s gone."

Iowa State didn’t use Montgomery much in the passing game. When they did throw to him he showed good hands. He continued to show that at camp. He made a diving catch deep down the sideline and made a nice catch on a low throw in the flat.

If he continues to make those catches on a regular basis, he’ll take a lot more snaps than anyone envisioned. It’ll also be a better situation than they had last season. Howard wasn’t much of a threat in the passing game and that was a reason why he’s not there anymore. If Montgomery (as well as Davis) can be that threat in the passing game it’ll make the offense a very dangerous one.

Montgomery is drawing comparisons to Kareem Hunt with his running and catching. That may be premature, though. We need to see how he does in full pads. He has, however, taken a good first step. Now he needs to continue that success.
