New York Jets: 3 Things Adam Gase must accomplish in 2019
It’s time for the New York Jets to become playoff contenders again. Here are three things that new head coach (and now interim GM) Adam Gase must accomplish in 2019.
There is a new sheriff in town and his name is Adam Gase. The new head coach of the New York Jets will enter the 2019 NFL season with a lot of pressure on him, especially following news on Wednesday that Mike Maccagnan has been fired and Gase will be the interim general manager.
After three seasons as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins, the 41-year-old Ypsilanti, MI native comes to the Big Apple with the opportunity to turn this beleaguered franchise around.
That won’t be easy. There will be tremendous pressure on him. It’s time for Gang Green to leave the land of also-rans and evolve into consistent playoff contenders in the AFC.

Here are three things that Gase needs to accomplish in 2019.
Get the Jets to the playoffs: Sounds simplistic, right? Jets fans are sick of losing. They’re sick of the Patriots. It’s time to finally turn things around. They have not been in the playoffs since 2010, one of the longest droughts in the league. In his first season with the Dolphins in 2016, Gase led Miami to the playoffs.
There will be expectations on him to do the exact same thing with the green and white. The honeymoon period won’t last past the season opener against Buffalo. Not in New York. The Jets have to, at the very least, capture a Wild Card berth this upcoming season. Case closed — or should I say, Gase closed.
Develop Sam Darnold: Gase is known as something of a quarterback whisperer. He was the offensive coordinator of the Denver Broncos when Peyton Manning threw for an NFL record 55 touchdown passes in 2013. He was the OC in 2015 with the Chicago Bears when Jay Cutler compiled the best passer rating (92.3) of his career.
He needs to aid the continued development of franchise signal-caller Sam Darnold, who will be entering his second NFL campaign in 2019. Darnold showed progress during his final four games last season (six touchdown passes, one interception) and has to continue to produce at a premium level in order for the Jets to become a viable playoff threat.
Reve up the O: Gang Green ranked 23rd in the league in scoring last season, averaging 20.8 points per contest. With the additions of Le’Veon Bell and Jamison Crowder, along with the continued development of Darnold, Gase has to make sure all the gears are running smoothly offensively.
He can deploy Bell in the slot from time to time as a dangerous receiver as well. Darnold’s weapons have improved — now Gase has to formulate a viable offensive scheme to jump-start New York’s offensive unit. The pressure is on.
