New England Patriots: 3 Vital statistics for 2019 season

It’s a feat some have said would never be matched. But lo and behold, the New England Patriots are just the third franchise to reach the Super Bowl three consecutive years. The Miami Dolphins were the first NFL team to play in three straight Super Bowls (1971-73), losing to the Dallas Cowboys (VI) before winning back-to-back Lombardi Trophies over the Washington Redskins (VII) and Minnesota Vikings (VIII), respectively.

And if the Patriots manage to get to the “Big Game” next February in South Florida, it will match the Buffalo Bills’ record of four consecutive appearances on Super Sunday, achieved by that franchise from 1990-93. Of course, the latter wound up never holding up a Lombardi Trophy. The talented Bills dropped all four games to the New York Giants (XXV), Washington Redskins (XXVI) and twice to the Dallas Cowboys (XXVII and XXVIII), respectively.
Meanwhile, it’s been quite the opposite for Bill Belichick’s team. A thrilling 34-28 overtime win in Super Bowl LI over the stunned Atlanta Falcons was followed by a wild 41-33 setback to the Philadelphia Eagles one year later at Minneapolis. And this past year, the Pats survived a defensive struggle against the Los Angeles Rams, 13-3, in the lowest-scoring game in the Super Bowl’s 53-year history.
More importantly, a fourth straight trip to the “Big Game” puts New England in position to win a record seventh Lombardi Trophy. Stay tuned.
