Quarterback: Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs

There are plenty of options to set the market for the quarterback position as the next wave of young quarterbacks washes over the NFL. Russell Wilson set the mark at $35 million per year, but just how high could the bar go when the new monster deal is signed?

It’s anyone’s guess. The Los Angeles Rams are likely to pay Jared Goff the big bucks when they finally give him a new deal. The same goes for the Philadelphia Eagles and Carson Wentz. However, if there’s one guy who figures to blow the lid off the quarterback market, it’s Patrick Mahomes.

The Kansas City Chiefs are likely to pay him whatever he wants after he took the NFL by storm in 2018. In his first season as a full-time starter, he embarrassed opposing defenses on a weekly basis, using his rocket of an arm, impeccable instincts and sneaky athleticism to secure himself the 2018 NFL MVP award.

As long as he doesn’t take a big step backward in 2019 (unlikely, assuming the Madden Curse isn’t real), Mahomes is going to get paid. The Chiefs will simply have no choice but to hand him a huge chunk of their salary cap.

The cost of locking down a franchise quarterback is steep. Kansas City will soon find that out the hard way.
