It’s now only happened three times in NFL history. A player has thrown at least 50 touchdown passes in a season.

More from NFL Spin Zone

Patriots’ quarterback Tom Brady first turned the trick in 2007 with 50 scores through the air. But New England lost to the New York Giants in Super Bowl LII. Six years later, it was Broncos’ signal-caller Peyton Manning who would throw for an NFL-record 55 scores for the single-season highest scoring team in league annals (606 points). That would culminate in a devastating 43-8 loss to the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl XLVIII.

A year ago, second-year hurler Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs finished the year with exactly 50 touchdown passes while throwing for 5,097 yards. Andy Reid’s club finished 12-4 and captured the top seed in the AFC playoffs. But those big numbers all went for naught as the Chiefs fell to the Pats overtime in the conference title game.

But Mahomes’ incredible production also came its share of miscues. The 2017 first-round pick from Texas Tech threw a dozen interceptions and also fumbled nine times, losing the ball twice. He also put the ball on the ground in each of his two postseason tilts but the club retained possession.

It added up to 14 turnovers for the talented quarterback, perhaps a few too many for Reid’s liking. Taking care the football might be something that the young performer needs to stress a little more this offseason.
