4. McVay will grow as a coach

There are plenty of reasons to like Sean McVay’s comments about his approach to the Super Bowl. Having the self-awareness to admit to over preparation for the biggest game in his career is refreshing and sobering.

McVay ”getting it” isn’t breaking news. He’s a smart guy who is going to use the hard lessons of a championship loss to better himself and the Rams. Fans shouldn’t forget that even with an injured Gurley, he managed to shepherd Los Angeles through tough playoffs games against the Dallas Cowboys and the New Orleans Saints.

It’s also worth looking back to what he did overall in 2018. McVay took the 11-5 Rams of 2017 and improved them to 13-3. Even in a watered-down NFC West, they managed to sweep the division and win the NFC Championship on the road.

He added just enough wrinkles to the offensive game plan to have both Gurley and quarterback Jared Goff in the MVP talk heading into the Thanksgiving holiday. Los Angeles would look uneven in December going 3-2, but the work overall was a success that led to a Super Bowl appearance.

Paralysis by analysis is no crime in sports. McVay freely admits to watching too much tape and not enjoying the moment. If he’s guilty of over-preparing, then so be it. He’s admitted to it, meaning it’s a mistake he won’t make again.
