New Orleans Saints: Worst 2019 offseason move?
Even the New Orleans Saints aren’t immune to making some bad choices during the offseason. Which move reigns supreme as their biggest fail in 2019?
As New Orleans Saints fans, it seems like a normal part of life to have to deal with the proverbial short end of the stick. With the missed PI call and the mistake in Minnesota, the internet is ripe with jokes. Regardless, there are also times where the Saints are the cause of their misfortune Looking at the 2019 offseason thus far, they’ve done pretty well but they have missed the mark on a few things. Which move by the Saints has been the least conducive to the team’s success?
The biggest surprise of them all was the Saints letting Mark Ingram go. While it’s unclear how contract negotiations went, it’s widely believed that Ingram wanted more money and the Saints weren’t willing to give it. The split seemed amicable but it does put a bit of a damper on their Super Bowl chances. Signing Latavius Murray was a good move in response, but it’s going to take a little time for him to get into the groove. With Ingram, it would have been second nature.
Letting go of Ingram wasn’t a huge mistake, though, even if one that seems to be lingering for now. As for one potential mistake, the Saints kept their draft class relatively small. The team did make a trade with Miami to move up but otherwise didn’t do much else. It was surprising as the Saints haven’t been afraid to take risks in previous years. While they did trade up, the team still didn’t have a pick in the first round.

Hopefully, not trading up into the first will be a non-factor this year. In terms of free agency, the Saints did relatively well. They went for guys who could make an immediate impact rather than superstars. It’s a good strategy and once again, hopefully, will pay off. Their free agency moves were where they shined most so they haven’t made any mistakes worth mentioning.
During this offseason, the major mistake the Saints made was not planning for the future. The team did restructure Drew Brees’ contract but didn’t draft his replacement. They re-signed Teddy Bridgewater for a year but that doesn’t guarantee anything. The team also didn’t find a long-term replacement at tight end as Jared Cook is 32 years old. Additionally, the team didn’t hand out any big contracts to studs like Cameron Jordan and Michael Thomas.
If the Saints win a Super Bowl this year, it’s going to be all about the future. Planning ahead could save them a lot of trouble later. This is easily the biggest mistake the team has made this offseason. Either way, they are farther ahead than some teams can even dream of being. It’s not bad for the Saints, but it could be better.
