Bleacher Report’s Chris Roling has the Dallas Cowboys as a top-five team when it comes to setting themselves up to be contenders in the future

During the early portion of the 2018 season, the Dallas Cowboys had their share of struggles. Even with that going on, team owner Jerry Jones came out and said that they had their quarterback of the future in Dak Prescott and that the team was going to extend him.

This was met with a lot of skepticism and it hasn’t dissipated even though Dak wound up leading a second-half comeback for the Boys. He finished with 3,885 yards and had a 22-to-8 touchdown to interception ratio. Prescott even added another six scores with his legs and completed just under 68 percent of his passes.

Even though he doesn’t have the entire fan base behind him, the Cowboys future feels bright as long as he’s the starter. That sentiment was echoed by Chris Roling of Bleacher Report who recently ranked the Top-10 teams in terms of future projections.

While the Indianapolis Colts took the No. 1 spot (and deservedly so), Dallas did fine coming in at No. 5. Roling cited all the above stats for Prescott while also diving into the fact that Ezekiel Elliott has been a league-leading rusher as well. And of course, there was mention of Amari Cooper who helped everyone on the team improve when he arrived last season.

After praising the work done by the new triplets, Roling then dives into even more reasons to believe in the Cowboys future:

"That is enough to stay in contention for a long time, though it sure doesn’t hurt that the offensive line is one of the better units in football. And the defense hardly allowed 20 points per game, in large part because Leighton Vander Esch is one of the next great NFL linebackers. Demarcus Lawrence and his 10.5 sacks are back, and budding secondary members like Chidobe Awuzie and Byron Jones should keep improving as a result."

The biggest concern has to be the salary cap as Dallas currently has room but needs to find a way to extend all three of their offensive superstars. Then the attention will also have to be turned to defense where players such as Jaylon Smith and Byron Jones will soon be needing new contracts.

Thankfully for the Boys, they’ve always been great with the cap. Even when they’re strapped, Stephen Jones has been able to find ways to move things around and do whatever they needed to in order to keep the players they want.

It won’t be easy and surely some may end up walking, but they’ll keep the players that they believe make them contenders.
