Round 4, Pick 126: Desmond King, CB, Iowa

Original Selection: Howard Wilson, CB, Houston

In full disclosure, I pitched this idea to the host of Locked On Browns Jeff Lloyd. Lloyd and co-host Pete Smith gave me a shoutout for the idea, so I return the favor here (15:00 mark). While attempting to avoid a ton of overlap with the guys at Locked On Browns, this selection is just too good to pass on.

If the Browns would have selected King over Howard, they would have a solid nickel cornerback on their defense. They ended up hitting the jackpot by signing undrafted free agent Briean Boddy-Calhoun after he was waived by the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Even Boddy-Calhoun, however, does not add up to the potential that King has brought to the Los Angeles Chargers and what he could have brought to Cleveland. As the Chargers’ nickel corner, King has already been named an All-Pro once, tallied four picks, 15 passes defended, four sacks, and 10 tackles behind the line of scrimmage.

As mentioned, Wilson has yet to play a single snap for the Browns. Imagining a secondary consisting of Denzel Ward, Greedy Williams, and Desmond King in the slot would be a defensive coordinator’s dream. Gregg Williams probably would have found a way to misuse King anyway, so it’s best he landed in Los Angeles.
